Roving Reporter | Rockport-Fulton Shopping Tournament a Huge Success!

The Aransas County ISD Education Foundation hosted its First Annual 2012 Rockport-Fulton Shopping Tournament October 12-13th. Twenty-eight local stores and 101 shoppers participated in this unique event, bringing in one day over $150,000 in revenue to our local businesses.

Stores offered previews on Friday evening for shoppers to make their shopping lists and prepare for the tournament. Many shoppers came prepared with holiday shopping lists. Saturday morning thirty teams of costumed shoppers enjoyed a “Tee-Time” pancake and omelet breakfast at Rockport-Fulton High School, prepared and served by Laci Johnson and Linda Hamilton’s culinary arts students, with the assistance of Tracy Goodwin (owner, Pops Tavern).

After selecting their “Shotgun Start” store, shoppers “played their rounds” and enjoyed a fun filled day of “shop ‘til you drop” entertainment provided by store owners. All of the stores offered a variety of incentives, including discounts, door prizes, drawings for merchandise, yummy snacks and beverages. ACISD school buses were available for shoppers to ride to each participating store during the event. Drop off points for their packages alleviated the “shopping burden” of toting heavy packages. At the end of the day, shoppers and store owners joined the team of Education Foundation volunteers at the Rockport Center for the Arts for snacks and beverages at the 19th Hole Awards Ceremony.

As shoppers waited for tournament results, store owners drew the names of their door prize winners and presented them with their prizes. Team awards for the event went to the Secret Shoppers, 1st place; Hey Big Spenders, 2nd place; and the Rockin’ Riviera Witches, 3rd place. Individual winners were Shawn Johnston, 1st place; Paula Dean, 2nd place; and Team Sssshhh Secret Shoppers, 3rd place.

Shoppers also voted on their favorite stores during the day, and shops ranked the teams that had the cutest costumes and the most spirit. The coveted Shoppers’ Choice Awards went to Shop the World, 1st place; Sassys, 2nd place; and Bay Window, 3rd place. Team Spirit awards went to Rockin’ Riviera Witches, 1st place; Bling It On, 2nd place; and the San Antonio Shoparachis, 3rd place. After the event, the Town of Fulton hosted a free live concert featuring Rip Tide where shoppers could unwind after a busy day. This tournament fundraiser provided a “win win” opportunity for all. Next year’s event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct 5. Mark your calendars!
