4 John Aäsp on the Steve Russell Exhibition at Rockport Center for the Arts

"If you walk into the main gallery at the Art Center this weekend, you might think you are looking at a large group show -- but you'd be mistaken. The over fifty paintings hanging until May 19th are all by the one and only Steve Russell. While most of the work was created over the last year, this show puts a spotlight on Russell's lifelong affinity for South Texas scenery, along with new abstract works never before seen. Aside from doing work for Ducks Unlimited, or being the 1994 Rockport Art Festival Poster Artist (whose poster has been sold out for years), Russell has appeared in group shows like Aransas Artists for Nature and the Jack Cowan Tribute exhibition held at the Art Center a few years ago. His work is part of a long and respected tradition of artists like Al Barnes and Herb Booth, whose unique perspectives on Gulf Coast life have given the art scene in Rockport a special energy for over forty years.

One of the original founding members of the Rockport Art Association, no artist's roots go deeper or branches spread wider. Displaying a masterful impressionist style, Russell is none other than the quintessential Rockport artist. Whether you've just discovered his work or have known Steve for years, this show will blow your hair back. I hope you'll join us for the Gallery Talk & Reception this Saturday, and don't miss the fabulous new quiltwork of local fiber artist Mimi Braniff in the Garden Gallery. Both shows are up through May 19." - John Aäsp, RCA Visual Arts Director

Gallery Talk starts @ 4:30pm | Reception continues until 7:00 pm. Free and open to the public | Also on view in the Garden Gallery: Mimi Braniff's Modern Quilting. www.rockportartcenter.com
