Profile | "Getting to Know Dean Monroe"

I was born in Brownwood, Texas in 1951, where I lived until I was about eleven years old. Since my father, Bill Monroe was a sort of wanderer, we moved a lot. As a matter of fact, I sat down with my mother one time and we figured it out that I went to twenty-seven schools and we moved forty-eight times...yep (48) times in a fourteen year time period.

I quit school when I was fourteen, and got my GED when I was eighteen years old. I did that on my own in Corpus Christi in 1969. I got married young at eighteen and divorced at thirty-nine. (I am still single and somewhat available by the way... *smile*)  My father was a carpet installer when I was young and I learned the flooring business from himstarting my own flooring installation business when I was seventeen in Rapid City, South Dakota.

I came to Corpus Christi to work after hurricane "Celia" for a while and fell in love with the Texas Coast. As a result of the short visit to Rockport in 1971, I decided to move back to Rockport in 1972. I stared "Monroe’s Carpet and Furniture" in 1972, but was doing business as "Monroe’s Surplus"back then buying and selling used furniture and some carpet. So far so good, as I developed Monroe’s into its current retail outlet for La-Z-Boy, Tempur-Pedic, and Serta mattresses, along with Shaw Flooring and other flooring and furniture products. Forty years now thanks to our loyal customer following we are still going strong! Thank you all very much for your continued support.

I have a daughter Stacey Raglin who is married to Ben Raglin from Mathis, Texas. Stacey is currently faithfully managing operations at Monroe’s while I run my fishing guide business, "Dean Monroe Fishing Guide Service;" I've been a full-time fishing guide now for twenty-one years. Stacey does an awesome job managing the store. I have two grandchildren, Adrianna Horton, now twenty-one and Dartagnan Griffin, now eighteen years old.

I love it here in Rockport, and the people are fantastic, as well as the fishing! I love writing songs, fishing, playing guitar, my dogs "Nugget" and "Pickle," and my two cats "Tyson" and "Slippers." I love business and traveling around the country catching some BIGGO fish. When I decide to retire, that’s all I wanna to do. I just got to find the right woman that loves fishing and traveling as much as I do to hang out with for the next coming years and I recon I’ll have it made. In the meantime, life is good!
