Becky Sanders | Mother, Runner, Motivator!

My daughters and I running Beach to Bay 2013
I grew up in a small town north of Houston - Splendora. We had horses, cows, chickens, and other animals throughout my life. It was your typical small town living.

That’s where I met my husband, Hank. We met in High School and have been together ever since. We have 3 wonderful children- Haley (16), Allison (13), and Nicholas (10).

My husband was in the US Navy and we spent 5 years in North Carolina where I worked as a doula for Navy and Marine Wives. I have always been into health and fitness but back then it was more about the health of mommies and their babies, and not so much about fitness.

After Hank got out of the military we moved back to north Houston. In 2006 my grandmother came to live with us. She had spent the last year in a nursing home because she had Alzheimer’s and was bed ridden. We decided we would bring her home to live with us until she passed away, which at the time the doctors said would be less than a year. Well she lived for another 5 years. It was a very rough but fulfilling 5 years. She really got me going on the health and fitness journey. I wanted to help her, I wanted to cure her, and I wanted her BETTER!!!!!! We did a lot of growing and learning over those 5 years. I also took up running during that time. I was caring for my grandmother, raising 3 children and trying to help my husband who was suffering from extreme PTSD. Running became my “me” time, my passion, my life.

I started a run group in our hometown, where several of us ladies would run together every weekend. I wanted more so I became a USA Track and Field coach, I also attended Institute of Integrative Medicine and graduated as a Certified Holistic Health Coach, and then as a Group Fitness Instructor, and RunnerGirlNutrition was born. I again wanted to help women just in a different capacity.

After my grandmother passed away in 2011, we all needed a change. We spent the next year preparing to move. My family lives here in Rockport so we spent the summer of 2012 here and decided we would stay. I started working with my sister at a real estate office while trying to get connected with the community and make a name for RunnerGirlNutrition. That is when I met Kimmi of Coastal Bend Health Food and Christy of RawY'all. I have been blessed with meeting these ladies who share a lot of the same thoughts and passions as I. This past Earth Day we put on Rockport’s first Earth Day 5k and fun filled event. Christy and I started running together and that’s how we started the Rockport Chapter of the nationally known Moms Run This Town free run group for women. (You can find us on FB under Rockport,Tx- MRTT.)

Today my family and I are staying at the Bay View RV Resort full time to help run the park and oversee activities. I teach water aerobics, fit club, boot camps and plan weekend activities. The owner and I are working to make Bay View more of a fitness inspired eco-friendly camping resort. We will also be adding a community garden in the next couple of weeks. This is a great place to be right now! But, we are a traveling family so not sure how long we will remain here but we will try to inspire while we are here.
