Happy First Day of School!

It's that time again...the first day of school. To all the hard working administrators, staff & teachers who are making plans, cutting out shapes for colorful lesson boards, crossing their Ts and dotting their Is for our students this year: THANK YOU. To our students: work hard and remember to have a lot of fun. And of course to our wonderful parents for everything they do. HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! We hope it's a wonderful one!

I saw the big orange bus come down my street early this morning. It stopped, picked up the neighbor kids, and whisked them away to the first day of a new school year.
This is a sound and sight I have heard and seen for 42 years on this little street. For five of those years, I drove that bus. I remember so many of those youngsters. They were individual packages of possibilities, dressed in their back-to-school clothes, new pencils and paper tucked into their backpacks, faces shining. I have been around long enough to see what those possibilities became. Some wonderful, some not so much. In almost every case, the outcome is traceable to their homes and parents or parent, sometimes aunts, uncles or grandparents. Good teachers and good schools are important, but the determining factor to a child's future is at home in most cases. That is the beginning and the end.
So, you who are entrusted with that little package of possibilities, feel the honor of that and live up to it.
And kids, remember who got you to school. Your BUS DRIVER!
