Roving Reporter | "Skip The Plastic Recognizes Joan & Scott Holt as ‘Bag Heroes’" | Sept 2014

The Bag Hero Program is a campaign to educate and encourage the use of reusable shopping bags in the Coastal Bend. We recognize community members who set a positive example by bringing reusable bags when shopping for groceries or other goods.

For the month of September, our Bag Heroes are Joan and Scott Holt. The Holts are marine scientists from the University of Texas Marine Science Institute and avid birders.

Now retired, they spend their time birding in Port Aransas at the Joan and Scott Holt Paradise Pond or traveling to exotic places for wildlife viewing.

The Holts have been using reusable bags for years because they know, first hand, the negative impacts that loose plastic bags have on the environment. With all that time spent outdoors, they can’t help but notice all the plastic debris littering their surroundings.

Having lived in Port Aransas for 39 years, they know the city has always had a close relationship with the environment. This is why they think Port Aransas is a natural to Skip the Plastic. “Minimizing our use of plastic bags is just another aspect of our environment-friendly philosophy and it is something we think about every time we go shopping. We would be very proud if Port Aransas would step up and take the lead in the Coastal Bend in the effort to reduce the use of plastic bags."
