Roving Reporter | Skip the Plastic: "Bag Hero of the Month for December is Kathy Jensen"

The Bag Hero Program is a campaign to educate and encourage the use of reusable shopping bags in the Coastal Bend. We recognize community members who set a positive example by bringing reusable bags when shopping for groceries or other goods.

For the month of December, our Bag Hero is Kathy Jansen. Kathy is the Director of Food Services/Chef at the Mustang Island Episcopal Conference Center on Highway 361.

One of Kathy’s many tasks is buying the groceries to prepare meals for up to eighty guests at the center. In order to feed that many people, she has to make three to five trips to the grocery store every week.

Noting the number of disposable plastic bags she was accumulating, Kathy made the switch to reusable shopping bags six years ago. She now keeps ten reusable bags in her car at all times, so they’re there when she needs them.

The purpose of Mustang Island Episcopal Conference Center, a ministry of Christian hospitality, is to provide a sacred place that offers guests rest, reflection, and renewal surrounded by God's coastal creation. Kathy says that using reusable bags, “Is one small way for me to be a good steward of the gift of God's creation.”

Previous Bag Heroes include Paulette Kluge, WWN Rockport, Joan & Scott Holt, A.P. “Freddy” Ramirez, Jace Tunnell, Dr. Sylvia Earle, Mary Beth Maxwell, Rae Mooney, Jean Payne, Weldon Lucas, Shelia Rogers, Barbi Leo, Stephanie Martinez, Aislynn Campbell, the team at the Texas Sealife Center, Casey Lain, Jennifer Reid, Daniela Sanchez, Jeff Francis, Lisa James, John Keller, Mayor Nelda Martinez, Ryan Chiasson, Tony Amos and former Mayor Joe Adame.
