2 Sisters and I at Boca Chica Beach, Texas

1. Where (and how) did you grow up?

I was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas. Our home was the center where all the cousins came together…we were a formidable force. On one occasion, I recall several aunts and uncles going to Boca Chica Beach…cars lined up in a row…connected by a sheet that was strung from one car to another. Life was great. What great memories!

2. How did your upbringing affect what you do for a living now?

My Mom expected that regardless of what job we had, that we did it to the very best. Having values and morals spoke volumes. Good manners were expected regardless of whom you spoke to. My grandmother had a saying “uno nunca sabe por quien trabaja.” In English - one never knows for whom you (will) work for. For those who know me know - you soy Mexicana – and can speak English and Spanish all at once as needed.

Mom was born in Brownsville, Texas and Dad was born in Belize, British Honduras. My parents divorced when I was five years old. My Mom raised three girls by herself! WOW! My full name is Mary Jeanne and somewhere along the years became MJ.

3. What brought you to Rockport?

My husband, Brian, accepted the position of General Manager at the Lighthouse Inn At Aransas Bay over 10 years ago. I have been so fortunate to live in various wonderful places…Houston (where I met Brian), Jacksonville, Florida; Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Palm Springs, California; Boulder, Colorado; Denver, Colorado; Sandy, Utah; and Georgetown, Texas. Do I know about moving and relocation!

I loved everyplace we lived - but Steamboat Springs is such a special place because this is where our son Charles was born. It is also the place where I first saw snow and learned to downhill ski.

4. What are your passions?
Family Reunion. MJ is in the back row, center, in a white shirt.

I love to cook. And in my spare time, I like to sew. Today I sew to create something fun. Growing up …we were quite financially challenged… I sewed to create designer clothes that only I had.

I am a faith driven person. I know that my life's journey is filled with God's blessings and grace.
