0 Roving Reporter | Rockport Center for the Arts, "Welcome Mr. John Speck, New Director of Visual Arts"

For over four decades, the Rockport Center for the Arts has developed a solid visual arts program. It has been constructed in great part thanks to the talented people that have handled the curatorial responsibilities of the Director of Visual Arts. A search committee made-up of board members, community artists, and staff conducted a detailed search to fill this critical role. That said, I am extremely excited to welcome John Speck - a new visual arts voice for the Art Center.

John, his wife Jamie, and their three children have called Rockport home for the last six years. He was born and raised in Fort Worth where he enjoyed the convenience of world-class institutions such as the Amon Carter Museum, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Modern Art Museum. These early experiences, along with a passion for art helped shape his education, and career in the visual arts.

John has a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Philosophy from Texas State University, as well as graduate degrees in the fields of Art, Education, and Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas A&M University. He has worked in education for the past fifteen years both as an art teacher and an administrator. His experience in the classroom and the studio has led him to work with all levels of artists- emerging, mid-career and established. John is a studio artist himself, and he has instructed drawing and printmaking workshops at the Art Center. He has also served on the Art Center's Board and as juror for the annual Art Festival. His wife Jamie is also a successful artist.

When asked about his appointment as Director of Visual Arts, John said "I am truly honored to serve the Rockport Center for the Arts and the incredible community of artists and patrons that make it such a special place. Working with these dedicated members, we will continue to develop the masterpiece that is the Art Center. I look forward to nurturing fresh talent, celebrating the successes of our established member artists, and attracting and introducing new professional artists and their work to our community."

Executive Director, RCA
