"Our 17th Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle hatching release for 2015 is scheduled for 6:45 am on Thursday July 16 at Padre Island National Seashore, on North Padre Island. No fee is charged to attend and watch our public hatchling releases.

However, sometimes hatching speeds up or slows down so before you come out to the release MAKE SURE to check this Facebook page or call the Hatchling Hotline at 361-949-7163 to check if the turtles are ready for release on schedule. If the release must be cancelled we will post a cancellation message on this Facebook page and on our Hatchling Hotline. If these cancellation messages have not been done by 2:00 am on the scheduled release day, then the release will be held as scheduled.

RELEASE DIRECTIONS:

The release will be held in front of the Malaquite Beach Visitor Center at Padre Island National Seashore. To attend, follow park road 22 out to Padre Island National Seashore. It will take 25-30 minutes to drive from the hotels and residential areas on North Padre Island to the release site. If the National Seashore Entrance Station is open, identify that you are attending the release, and you will not be charged park entrance fees. About four miles after the National Seashore Entrance Station, you will see a hatchling release sign on the right and the large Malaquite Beach Visitor Center parking lot on the left. You should turn left there, park your vehicle in the large lot, and meet on the deck of the Visitor Center. A park ranger will meet you there to deliver a program about the turtles (starting at about 6:20 am) and lead you to the release site (at 6:45 am). For those arriving early, please note that the hatchling release sign will not be present until about 6:15 am.

At the release, you should not bring or eat food since it will attract gulls, and you should not wear white colored clothing or white colored footwear or take photos or video using a flash, since all of these will disorient the hatchlings.

FUTURE RELEASES:

Approximately ¾ of the clutches found this year have hatched and the hatchlings have been released. After the current group of clutches hatches, relatively few clutches will remain in incubation and there will only be about 4 more public Kemp’s Ridley hatchling releases at Padre Island National Seashore this year, through early-August. Each line in the table below includes the clutches found on one day that were brought to our incubation facility.

PROJECTED RELEASE DATES FOR KEMP’S RIDLEY CLUTCHES HELD IN THE INCUBATION FACILITY AT PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE

Clutches will hatch and hatchlings will be released SOMETIME DURING the following projected date ranges:
  • July 15-20 (9 clutches)
  • July 22-17 (1 clutch)
  • July 25-30 (1 clutch)
  • July 27-Aug. 1 (2 clutches)
  • July 28-Aug. 2 (6 clutches)
  • July 29-Aug. 3 (3 clutches)
  • July 31-Aug. 5 (3 clutches)
  • Aug. 1-6 (1 clutch)
  • Aug. 3-8 (3 clutches)
  • Aug. 16-21 (1 clutch) (likely not a public release since only 1 clutch)
  • Aug. 24-29 (1 clutch) (likely not a public release since only 1 clutch)

Note that only a portion of the clutches are released during the public releases, and public releases do not occur daily. Hatchlings must be released when they become active. When hatchlings become active unexpectedly or in the middle of the night, the public cannot be invited to the release. Due to these factors, we schedule public releases for days when multiple clutches are hatching. This provides “insurance” so that even if some clutches must be released in the middle of the night, others might still be available and frenzy at the scheduled release time. Therefore, we advise people traveling here from out of town in hopes of attending a release to target date ranges when several clutches are due to hatch at once, arrive at the beginning of the five day projected release date range, and be able to stay a few days within that date range.

As the eggs begin to hatch, we start to narrow the projected release window. When we believe that some hatchlings may frenzy at 6:45 am the next morning, we schedule a public release. We announce the public releases on this Facebook page and on our Hatchling Hotline, with along with further instructions.
