Roving Reporter | "Skip The Plastic Recognizes Julie Findley as January ‘Bag Hero’"

The Bag Hero Program is a campaign to educate and encourage the use of reusable shopping bags in the Coastal Bend. We recognize community members who set a positive example by bringing reusable bags when shopping for groceries or other goods.

Our January Bag Hero is Julie Findley, Chairperson of Keep Port Aransas Beautiful, or KPAB. KPAB is affiliated with Keep America Beautiful and its mission is to promote public interest in creating a cleaner, more beautiful Port Aransas through volunteerism and education.

Members of KPAB enthusiastically supported the Port Aransas City Council’s decision to ban single-use plastic shopping bags. The new ordinance, which took effect on January 1st, will help to keep loose bags off the beach and out of the Gulf of Mexico and bays. This will ultimately benefit residents, the city’s tourism-related businesses and the marine creatures that live in the surrounding waters.

Julie states, “I am thrilled that Port Aransas has made a commitment to reduce the use of plastic bags, and I’m optimistic that the transition from plastic to reusable bags will be smooth. To paraphrase a Chinese proverb: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Preventing plastic bags from entering coastal and marine environments is just one step toward cleaning up our ocean."
