Roving Reporter | "A couple of people at the City Council..." | 2 Photos and Text by Sally Mitchell

"A couple of people at the City Council workshop yesterday mentioned the "two species" nesting in the Bent Oaks Rookery. [Read a meeting re-cap by Jeanette Larson] I want to note that there are at least four species that nested there last year. In addition to the large numbers of great blue herons and great egrets there are a fair number of black-crowned night herons which have nested there for several years and last year a few roseate spoonbills were also reported nesting there. I have the numbers from last years official count -- somewhere .... will add them here if I find them. I've also seen a few black-bellied whistling ducks climbing in the trees and since they are tree nesters I suspect there may be / have been a few that nest here." - Sally Mitchell
