Letter to the Editor | “Compliment to Judge Mills” by Linda Holzman

A compliment to Judge Mills and a suggestion that voters remain aware: 6-4-2016

Although I have a very negative view of the 5/7/2016 attempt to create a Groundwater Control District, I believe in giving credit where it is due.

In an article published in the Rockport Pilot on 5/11/2016, Judge Burt Mills was credited with making some erroneous statements.

1- “The Judge pointed out Aransas County is one of seven counties in the State of Texas without a groundwater district.”

2- “Mills pointed out they cannot request again for a groundwater district for two years.......”

I wrote to Judge Mills and asked that he correct those assertions publicly. I received a most gracious reply in which the Judge stated, “I spoke about how many counties are without groundwater districts thinking the person I heard that from was actually knowledgeable and without checking myself that I again apologize for speaking out of turn. The way I understand it from Mr. Callan the court could in two years if it looked feasible at that time go out for another election for the people to again decide up or down and if not the legislation that was done goes away. I do hope that if that occurs that the public is better informed.”

Judge Mills further had a retraction printed on 5/21/2016 on page A10 of the Rockport Pilot in which he PUBLICLY corrected his statement that only 7 counties in TX did not have a groundwater district but, instead, only 100 counties DO have a GCD.

The election of May 7, 2016 may have been a first volley in an attempt to establish a GCD in this county. Remain alert or, better yet, go to the GCD board meetings. Schedules and minutes are at this website. https://www.aransascountytx.gov/groundwatercomm/minagend.php
