Roving Reporter | "Skip The Plastic recognizes Betty Gustafson as ‘Bag Hero’"

The Skip the Plastic project of the Texas Coastal Bend Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation (TXCBC) recognizes community members and businesses that set a positive example by making the shift to reusable shopping bags or other alternatives to single-use plastic bags.   Our June Bag Hero is North Padre Island resident Betty Gustafson. Betty moved to the island a few years ago to be closer to her daughter’s family and to enjoy the watery surroundings.

When asked why she brings her own bags when shopping, she answers without hesitation, “Plastic pollution is a massive problem and, at the same time, an intensively personal environmental problem. We touch plastics every day of our lives and with every trip to the grocery store. On the bright side, all of us can do something immediately and measurably to contribute to a solution.” She then adds with a smile, “If you are all fantastic, do something drastic to skip the plastic and say no to plastic and yes to nature.”
