Roving Reporter | "R-F Varsity Boys Basketball Team Won 2nd Tourn.' by Mary Rampellini

"The Rockport-Fulton varsity boys basketball team won its second tournament of the season on Friday, when it defeated Gregory Portland in the championship game of the Odem Christmas Tournament.

Earlier in the season, Rockport-Fulton won the Redfish Classic Tournament.

The Odem Christmas Tournament drew 12 teams. Rockport-Fulton went 4-for-4 during the series. The Pirates moved through the first round of action by defeating Annapolis Christian 50-36. The team then defeated Goliad 69-39 and Odem 51-46 before advancing to the championship game and a showdown with Gregory Portland.

“Great team effort in the Odem Christmas Tournament,” said Ralph Rampellini, head varsity boys basketball coach for Rockport-Fulton. “In the championship game, our kids executed the gameplan really well. Each player stepped up and made big plays. It was a team win. I’m really proud of these guys.”

The final score for the championship game was 39-29.

A trio of Rockport-Fulton team members were recognized for their efforts during the Odem Christmas Tournament. Juanito Garcia was voted Most Valuable Player and Vincent Comacho and Alex Parker were named First Team, All Tournament.

The win in Friday’s championship game was the second time this season that Rockport-Fulton, a 4-A school, has defeated Gregory Portland, a 5-A program. The teams met in November, at Portland.

Rockport-Fulton is now 12-5 on the season."
