Roving Reporter | "Local Ducks Race for the Pool" by Jeanette Larson

At the second annual Duck Race, sponsored by the Friends of the Pool, more than 500 rubber ducks raced to the finish line. Three winning ducks earned cash prizes for their lucky ducky participants. Ruth Davis won $300 with the first place winner, Betty Ohlhauser won $200 for her second place duck, and Victoria Mercer's duck came in third for $100. Duck wranglers dumped the rubber ducks into lanes at the starting line. Duck pushers urged the ducks along with paddles and by creating currents, while duck pluckers pulled them out of the water at the finish line.

A Real Live Mermaid!

Before the race the pool lifeguards conducted a demonstration of three different life-saving techniques they can use. The lifeguards had to do three rescues in under five minutes. Water aerobics instructor Magen Berry then demonstrated paddle board yoga in a mermaid outfit. If there is enough interest, this is a potential class that could be added to the Community pool schedule. After the race, participants and observers enjoyed a bake sale and silent auction. Proceeds from the Duck Race activities support water safety classes for children and other pool programs and materials not in the regular budget. This year's proceeds will fund the Odyssey Afterschool Swim Lessons program. The Friends of the Pool is a 501(c)3.
