Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host a Texas Wine Industry presentation on May 26, 2017 at 5:30p.m. at the Extension Office located at 892 Airport Road, Rockport TX 78382.

The program is designed for anyone interested in learning more about the exciting agricultural industry that has made Texas the country’s fifth-leading wine producing state. Texas is the site of the first vineyard established in North America by Franciscan priests circa 1662. The Texas wine industry has grown from 21,000 cases made in 1982 to more than 1.2 million cases today from over 400 wineries. Topics include; grape varieties and the growth of the wine industry in the Coastal region of Texas.

Fran Pontasch is a Viticulture Program Specialist for the Gulf Coast Region for AgriLife Extension. Fran previously served as a Viticulture Advisor with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service for the North Texas Region, and she has work experience as a vineyard manager and vineyard consultant. Fran holds a B.S. in Horticulture from Texas A&M University and an M.S. in Biology from Sul Ross University where she studied Pierce’s Disease in Grapes in the Davis Mountains.
