Stories from the Storm | "Desmond (a Cat) Helps Bebe (a Dog)" | by Jeanette Larson

Dr. Harrell with a portrait of Desmond
During evacuation a tiny chihuahua named Bebe was outside in an area with no fence when she was attacked by a larger dog. She lost a lot of blood and developed a life-threatening condition. According to Dr. Kimberly Harrell, her owner's "used every dime they had on plasma and blood transfusions" at an out of state emergency center. Bebe returned to Rockport with an infected wound that will require surgery and several days in the hospital to fix. She needs to bandaged and on fluids the entire stay. Her family doesn't have the funds for the surgery but luckily a cat was able to help through Desmond's Fund, an emergency fund maintained by Bay Breeze Animal Clinic. After the surgery, performed on September 24, Bebe is recovering nicely at home and is expected to be able to resume her normal chihuahua life.

But who was Desmond and what is the fund? If you look on the wall in Bay Breeze Animal Clinic there is a painting of a Desmond. There are also photographs of Desmond hanging down the wall and on the clinic's Facebook page. Who was Desmond and how is his fund helping animals today? In April 2008 local boys tortured a cat, hanging him by the back legs for days before setting him on fire. The cat somehow survived and caring local residents chipped in to Desmond's Fund to pay for his care. After multiple skin grafts and lots of medical care, Desmond was able to lead a happy life, first at the Center and then in a home until his passing in 2011.

Dr. Harrell has continued the fund to help other pets that need care their owner's can't afford. Although enough was donated to help Bebe in her hour of need, the fund is now depleted. Even with grant funds from the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation (TVMF) and donated medications, the need for help is great. Please help replenish the fund to help other animals and their families by making a contribution.

Contributions to Desmond's Fund can be made at Bay Breeze Animal Clinic or by mail, 1005 E Main St., Rockport, TX 78382.
