Rockport Center for the Arts | "Education updates October 21, 2017"

We've been working hard behind the scenes to bring you more great educational programming. I'm excited to announce that we have a variety of exciting classes coming now in November, many with a drop-in structure to provide flexibility for everyone's dynamic schedules during recovery. Ceramic Workshop
with Bob Lockhart
Bob is returning to our faculty again this fall with one of his most popular workshops, ceramic sculpture. Come learn the ins and out of creating expressive ceramic sculpture in this split-week workshop. Students will create their art pieces during the first week, then pieces will be fired over the weekend. During the second week students will paint and finish their sculptures followed by a critique time.

Guided Open Drawing
with Martha Berkebile
This course is designed to help you improve your drawing skills and to accommodate multiple drawing experience levels. Brief weekly tips and exercises will be offered to the class followed by individualized help in drawing subjects of your choice. You’ll learn to evaluate your drawings and to identify and correct problems. All drawing media are welcome.

All drawing media are welcome.
The student will help determine the subject matter. Students should bring a medium that they are comfortable with, and the appropriate paper, brushes, tools that they will need to draw. At a minimum, students should have a basic drawing set that includes pencils in a variety of hardnesses, a kneaded eraser and a sketch pad that is no smaller than 11”x14”.
Collage Exploration
with Kelly Schaub
Students will explore hand-cut paper and mixed media collage using a variety of techniques and materials. We will explore scale, color, composition, thematic work, texture, layers, and abstract collage, working in a range of styles and with a wide assortment of materials.

Things that we will be using during this workshop:
  • magazines, old books and other found ephemera.
  • Mod Podge or other glues. I like Yes Paste, and a Permanent Archival Glue Stick. Feel free to use whatever glue that you feel comfortable using. I will give a brief overview of the options that you have.
  • acrylic matte medium (small jar)
  • gloss acrylic medium (small jar) 
  • hard rubber brayer (roller) or wallpaper seam roller
  • substrates: 140 lb or heavier watercolor paper, wood panels, mat board, primed art panels etc. We will be using mostly watercolor paper. I buy pads of Canson Cold Press watercolor paper in 11" x 15" and 9" x 12" pad and cut each sheet to the size I need. Each pad has 30 sheets. I will give a brief overview of the options that you have.
  • brushes for glue and paint
  • any ephemera that you might have including old photos, books, scrapbook paper, etc.
  • scissors and utility knifes
Optional:
  •  Self-healing cutting mat
  • various paints that may include but not limited to: gouache, watercolor, acrylic, watercolor pencils and other water soluble paints
  • tracing paper (9" x 12") and other paper including gridded and ruled paper or any other vintage paper
  • colored and white tissue paper
  • ruler
  • any other material that you may want to use.

Book Based Collage
with Kelly Schaub
In this four-hour workshop, students create hand-cut paper and mixed media collage using a variety of techniques and materials. All projects will use book covers and pages, which will be provided – feel free to bring your own old paperbacks, hardcovers or pages if you have any favorites. These upcycled artworks will make use of discarded or damaged books. Each student will leave with several book-based collages.

Junk Art Owls
with Kelly Schaub
In this four-hour workshop, students will create a three-dimensional owl sculpture or wall hanging from found objects and old, broken “junk”. Basic materials, adhesives, paints, and a whole host of rusted, broken, found objects will be provided, along with ideas and inspiration for creatively re-using old items and turning them into unique one of a kind art!

One-Day Workshop
Wednesday, November 15, 10 AM - 2 PM

Non-Member Tuition $50 per class
Supply Fee $15, all materials provided - students are welcome to bring their own raw materials.

with Susan Fest

Figure Drawing
with Clothed Model
Join us for figuring drawing. We will provide a clothed model each week. 4 students needed to meet model fee each week. Please pre-register for each class session with Karen no later than the day before each session.

Art and Spirituality: An Exploration
with Carol Frappier
Bring the media you are most comfortable with and we will explore the connection between art and spirituality. Each class will begin with a brief discussion of a spiritual concept and illustrations of how this may have been expressed historically in visual art. We will take a moment for quiet contemplation before setting our individual intentions for our session. Instruction will be in the form of individual help for each student.

Stonecarving Workshop
with Bob Lockhart
Come explore a new medium for our course offerings with past Artist-in-Residence, Bob Lockhart. Students will work in alabaster, considered a soft stone. Students will take home a completed piece at the conclusion of the workshop.

Please email any specific brands and sizes and relevant details if you can - we will do our best to meet your needs! If you have art supplies to donate please email Karen as well!
FREE Family Saturdays
For all parents, grandparents and children at heart-

Your favorite community art program will return on Saturday, September 23 from 10 am - 3 pm and meet every Saturday throughout the Fall months.

We will be meeting at Windway Gallery in Downtown Rockport, located at 203 S Austin St

We hope you will take a break from your clean up and come out and create something beautiful!
