Roving Reporter | "Community Pool Almost Back to Normal" by Jeanette Larson

The Rockport Community Pool and Aquatic Center is almost back to normal. Like most of the area, the pool took a pretty heavy hit from Harvey with plenty of damage to equipment, buildings, and trees around the park. Repairs included new diving boards and an ADA-compliant chair lift for entry and exit After a lot of work by Parks Department and Aquatic Center staff, the pool was able to reopen for a few activities at the end of October. These included the ever-popular Doggie Dunk and some Halloween events. The pool officially opened for swimming and exercise classes on November 1.

There is still work to be done, and some equipment is still on order, but the heater is working and the pool is full! Aerobic classes and water walking have resumed at their previous times (see the monthly calendar on the City webpage or call 361-727-9989.  The Skate Park has also reopened. The Aquatic Center and Skate Park is located at 2001 Stadium Drive, Rockport and is jointly owned by the City of Rockport, the Town of Fulton, and Aransas County.

The pool is very popular with locals and Winter Texans. According to Bonnie Bullis, a longtime "poolie" and member of the Friends of the Pool, "With all the turmoil our town has gone though, it is wonderful to see our pool is open again. The water walkers are going in circles, talking and walking. Our classes are filling up and it is great to see people out having fun. Being in the water is a great stress reducer."  Pool regulars agree that they have missed the exercise and camaraderie and are glad to have this bit of normalcy back in their lives.
