Happy New Year!

We're ready to kick off 2018 in creative style! Below you'll find the list of classes that start next week. 

We invite you to join us this Friday @ the Center from 1 - 3 p.m. for our annual Open House and Winter Texan Day. Many of our instructors will be on hand to give you a sneak preview of what they will be teaching and to answer your questions. Light refreshments will be provided. We hope you will join us!

Monday Mornings

The Elements of Art
with Janice Bartke Thompson
Join Janice for an in-depth structured presentation of the introductory components of Art. The course builds toward a foundational knowledge base for the serious beginning student-artist of concepts, principles, components and mechanics of the diverse elements of artistic expression.This six week series is designed with the beginner/novice/curious/inquisitive adult in mind. Due to the accumulative nature of subject matter, this course of instruction is not recommended for the “drop-in” student. Material presented via computer based visual presentations, video, and instructor led demonstration with student reinforcement through hands on practices.


6-Week Series

Monday Afternoons

Guided Open Drawing
with Martha Berkebile
This course is designed to help you improve your drawing skills and to accommodate multiple drawing experience levels. Brief weekly tips and exercises will be offered to the class followed by individualized help in drawing subjects of your choice. You’ll learn to evaluate your drawings and to identify and correct problems. All drawing media are welcome.

Non-Member Tuition $45 per individual class

Materials List:
All drawing media are welcome.
The student will help determine the subject matter. Students should bring a medium that they are comfortable with, and the appropriate paper, brushes, tools that they will need to draw. At a minimum, students should have a basic drawing set that includes pencils in a variety of hardnesses, a kneaded eraser and a sketch pad that is no smaller than 11”x14”.

Tuesday Mornings

Collage Exploration
with Kelly Schaub
In this four-week course, students will explore hand-cut paper and mixed media collage using a variety of techniques and materials. We will explore scale, color, composition, thematic work, texture, layers, and abstract collage, working in a range of styles and with a wide assortment of materials. Students will be able to share homework in an online group and will participate in an online exhibit at the end of the course.

Foundations of Art
for Home School Children
with Audrianna Rios
Join us this winter as we study the vibrant world of art! Students will explore the fundamentals of art through an integrated theoretical and historical perspective. Each class session will focus on a single design principal in art and we will explore Masters and Masterworks as jumping points for exciting hands-on assignments. Multiple projects will be completed in class which are designed to solidify concepts and to inspire creativity. Fun homework assignments will help keep students engaged in the topic between class sessions. 


7-Week Series

Tuesday Afternoons*

Print Studio Is Open
We were able to salvage both the small and large print presses and we're excited to see them back in use! So, we're setting aside every other Tuesday in January to Printmaking Studio time. We hope to continue in February as space is available. All print makers are welcome, but we do ask that you be a member of Rockport Center for the Arts to use the facility.

Stained Glass
with Susan Fest
This class is designed for beginners. We will work with simple, easy to work patterns to get started. Students will complete a minimum of one piece.

Wednesday Mornings

Watercolor Painting
with Sandy Reese
Come join us for some watercolor fun. We will learn basic tips and techniques and create finished paintings. Beginners are welcome as well as those more experienced painters will have the opportunity to brush up on composition and techniques.  We will have a demo and then you will be able to work on a class project or a project of your choosing.

Open Studio Time
for Members
We've done our best to set aside Wednesday afternoons each week from 1 - 4 PM for our artists to work on their own projects and enjoy time for conversation and collaboration. Easels, tables, print presses and such will be available for your use. Studio use is a free service for Art Center members only.

Thursday Mornings

Figure Drawing
with Clothed Model
Join us for figuring drawing. We will provide a clothed model each week. 4 students needed to meet model fee each week. Please pre-register for each class session with Karen no later than the day before each session.

Thursday Afternoons

Composition & Design
with Carol Frappier
Take your art to the next level with an in depth exploration of the elements of Composition and Design. Learn when to use symmetry, asymmetry, and the Golden Mean to compose your painting or drawing. Explore focal point, rhythm, balance, emphasis, repetition, contrast and texture. Learn how to use these concepts to power up your painting. Learn how to extract the essence from reference materials and use them in compositions to create your own unique expression.
Bring whatever two dimensional painting or drawing materials you are comfortable with. Bring reference materials. All skill levels are welcome.

Accordion Mixed Media Collage Desk Calendar
Friday, January 12
9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Jump into 2018 with a one-of-a-kind accordion-style standing desk calendar. In this four-hour workshop, students will create 12 mini collages that are designed to stand on a desk, accordion-style. Collages can be tied together with quotes and/or images about time, holidays, or the seasons.

All materials provided.

The Game is On
Friday, January 19
9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

In this four-hour workshop, students will explore collage with some
unusual substrates and materials. Working with altered playing cards, bingo cards, game boards, and game pieces, students will create several small collages that can be matted, framed or attached to greeting cards.

All materials provided.

Mixed Media Valentine Collage Triptych
Friday, January 26
9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

In this four-hour workshop, students will create a one-of-a-kind Valentine triptych using a variety mixed media and collage techniques. Each student will complete 3 panels that work together into one
comprehensive piece of art that reflects love.

All materials provided.

Jewelry: Findings and Ear Wires with Beaded Hoop Earrings
Friday, January 12
1:30 - 4:30 PM

This 3-hour class will cover basic earring design, how to make post earrings, with Nell's special beaded hoop design being the feature topic.

Jewelry: Beaded Chain Bracelet and Dangle Earrings in Argentium
Friday, January 19
1:30 - 4:30 PM

This 3-hour class will first teach a simple ear wire and dangle earring design. The same pattern of wire work will be used to make beaded links for a simple chain bracelet with a loop-and-hook closure. 

All materials provided.

Mixed Media Scratchboard with Acrylics
Friday, January 26
1:00 - 5:00 PM

This 4-hour class teaches basic use of Scratchboard prepared panels (Ampersand Scratchbord is made in Buda, Texas). The board is used as a mixed media base. We will add in small pieces of Claybord if time allows, and will talk about use of small works in making assemblage as well.

All materials provided.

Saturdays

FREE Family Saturdays
For all parents, grandparents and children at heart-

Your favorite community art program will return on Saturday, January 13 from 10 am - 3:30 pm and meet every Saturday throughout the Fall months.

We will be meeting at 106 S Austin Street

Weekly projects will be posted on our Facebook page.
