Community Information | New Medicare Cards on the Way

According to AARP, Medicare will begin mailing out new Medicare cards over the next twelve months. Since many residents in Aransas County receive Medicare benefits, be on the lookout for your new card and be alert to potential new scams. The new cards will have a unique Medicare beneficiary identifier (MBI) that will no longer be your social security number. Cards will be randomly shipped so don't be alarmed if your spouse or other family member gets a card but you don't.
Alerts include:
  • Destroy your old card when you get the new one. The old one has your social security number and is valuable to identity thieves. Shred your old card.
  • There is no cost for the new card. Scammers may call and ask for payment in order to receive your new card.
  • Do not give banking or other personal information over the phone. Medicare will NEVER request banking information to send you a premium refund.  The new cards do not change your premiums and if you were due any refunds Medicare already has your information for direct deposits.
