City of Rockport | A Message from Mayor Rios | May 16, 2018

Happy First Letter, Mayor Rios!

A Message from Mayor Rios

May 16, 2018

I’m honored to carry the torch handed over by C.J. Wax. He’s a hard act to follow. A special thank you to all those who have lent their encouragement and support as we move forward to a brighter future.

As mentioned in last week’s letter, there was no Long-Term Recovery meeting today. Nonetheless, we wanted to share some new information and remind you about others.

  • Rick McLester, head of the Aransas County Emergency Operations Center, was honored earlier this week with an induction into the Texas Division of Emergency Management’s Hall of Fame.  A well-deserved honor.
  • City of Rockport is seeking applicants for the Ward 3 vacancy that resulted with my election to mayor.  Criteria and application form are available on the City’s web site or by visiting the Rockport Service Center, located at 2751 SH 35N Bypass.  Deadline for submission is June 1.
  • The City has an assigned FEMA representative on site to smooth the process for rebuilding.
  • Taco Bell re-opened today in a new building at its former location.
  • Dollar General and the Town of Fulton have announced that the company will open a new location in September at the former Ollie’s Dance Hall/Corner Pocket on Hwy 35 N.

  • Private Property Debris Removal (PPDR) funding has come through. Homeowners, who did not register earlier this year, may do so at the Library from 9 – 6 on weekdays beginning May 14.
  • Dumping on streets and highways and private property (without the owner’s permission) is illegal and subject to fines.
  • Information and handout materials from the “Rebuilding After the Storm” grant information workshops are available on the City of Rockport’s web site under the “Floodplain Management” tab.
  • Counseling services are available to Aransas County residents on Tuesday evenings from 5 – 7 pm at the Aransas County Library.  There is no charge to residents. The program is underwritten by Rebuild Texas and other foundations.
  • The deadline for applying for the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans is in two weeks.
  • FEMA Transitional Shelter program has been extended to June 1.

Upcoming Meetings

  • Emergency Management Conference in San Antonio May 15 – 18
  • Hurricane Meeting in College Station May 30-31
Note:  There may not be a Mayor’s Message

Rebuilding a better Rockport.
