Roving Reporter | "A Happy Day for the Dogs: Memorial Dog Park Re-opens" by Jeanette Larson (11 Photos)

Almost nine months after Harvey spent a little too much time in Rockport, the dog park at Memorial Park re-opened. The City of Rockport Parks Department held a reopening celebration on Friday, May 4 using the Star Wars theme, May the Fourth Be With You. Activities included a kissing booth, costumes for photo opportunities, food, and door prizes. Plus, of course, play time with other dogs in the park. Booths were staffed by local animal organizations, including Another Chance Animal Rescue (volunteers assisting Aransas County Animal Control) and The Humane Society of Aransas County. Salty Dog Pet Resort provided free nail trimming and goodies, while Moore than Feed provided lots of dog biscuits for attendees. Other sponsors and exhibitors included Clip N Dip Grooming Salon,  PetMeTags, and Aransas County Animal Control. Door prizes and baskets were provided by Salty Dog and PetMeTags  and were won by Elizabeth Geers, Nicole H., James Smallwood, Laura Bonneau, Matthew Grimes, and Cayden Trevino.

Rick Martinez, Parks Director, had told the Parks Board there was no timeline for when the dog park would re-open as there was a lot of damage to the back sections. A Boy Scout troop from Round Rock, TX came down and did a lot of work, allowing the parks staff to fast track their work and re-open earlier than expected. Local dogs cheered the efforts of the parks staff and the Boy Scouts.
