The first Art Center Market, which has become a monthly event, happened on March 17, 2018. The happening was a total success, featuring 14 booths and 18 artist participants. For the months of March and April the market was open on the third Saturday of the month. In May it was changed to the second Saturday to take advantage of more activities happening in conjunction with other downtown businesses which stay open late for customers.

When hurricane Harvey happened, the Art Center lost its facility. At its current location in the downtown area, the Art Center does not have space for a members’ gallery, the place where over hundreds of artists displayed their work. The idea of using the property lot next to the Art Center as a marketplace for member artists was born. Teresa Fajardo Lambert, the progenitor of the idea and its champion set the event into motion immediately.

“It’s a win-win situation,” Fajardo Lambert states. She adds “we have added a place for the artists to sell their works, and created additional foot traffic for the downtown merchants.”

The space has a total of 30 spaces, each 10 by 10 feet. The next Art Center Market is scheduled for Saturday, June 9 from 10 AM to 4 PM. A total of 29 member artists are registered for the June installment of the market. June’s Art Center market features fine art paintings, jewelry, pottery, photography, woodwork, glasswork, master crafts and more. All items for sale are original works of fine quality. One of the great things about Art Center Market is artists keep all sale proceeds,” adds Fajardo Lambert.

Art Center Market has been well received by artists, visitors, the community, and downtown merchants. “We know that with added publicity and public relations, it will also become a tourism driver that will benefit the entire Austin Street corridor,” stated Luis Purón, Executive Director.

The Art Center recently released a new logo to brand the event; which features live music and food trucks.

Artists interested in becoming vendors must be a member in good standing of Rockport Center for the Arts.
