City of Rockport | "Hassinger Appointed to Rockport City Council"

Warren Hassinger has been appointed to fill out the remaining term for the City of Rockport’s Ward 3, which became vacant upon the election of Pat Rios to Mayor in May. He will be sworn in at the City Council meeting on June 12 and his term will run until May 2019.

Other candidates for the position were Dudley McDaniel and Thomas Staley. The selection was made following a closed session meeting of City Council on June 5, where all three applicants were interviewed over the course of more than two hours. A fourth application was received but the applicant later withdrew.

Hassinger moved to Rockport in 2014 after serving 30 years with Travis County Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 5, the last 21 years in various EMS administrative roles. He has also worked 27 years with the City of Austin, where he was actively involved in the Emergency Medical Services Department and the STAR Flight program. He also served 37 years in various roles as a volunteer Firefighter/Paramedic, Fire Chief, ESD Board Member, and ESD President.

Since retiring to Rockport, he has been actively involved in the community, including serving as President of the Harbor Oaks Property Owners Association, Co-Chair of the YMCA Development Committee, and as Co-Chair of the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce’s SeaFair. In 2014, Hassinger also led the City’s effort examining emergency medical services.

Mayor Pat Rios said, “The Council had the fortunate, but difficult, problem of having to decide between three very qualified candidates. We felt any one of the three would have been a good fit and could have done an excellent job for Ward 3.” Hassinger commented, “In the four years since moving to Rockport, my wife and I have come to really love Rockport. I appreciate the Council’s vote of confidence and hope to be able to assist with our Harvey recovery as well as other opportunities that present themselves to our community.”
