Representatives from Coastal Bend United, San Patricio EDC, and Corpus Christi EDC unveiled a region-wide community petition drive to stop premium rate increases by Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA). They were joined in Aransas Pass at the intersection of N Rife St. and Cleveland Blvd. by homeowners, local businesses, and elected officials who oppose a 10 percent rate hike for policyholders in the fourteen coastal counties.

The goal of the petition is to prevent the insurance industry from imposing a premium rate increase on the backs of people still reeling from the impact of Harvey. “There’s a perception out there that we are fine, and the reality is that there are still a lot of businesses and families out there trying to recover,” said Cleo Rodriguez, President/CEO of United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, “We want the insurance commissioner to just say no to TWIA and this poorly timed premium rate increase”. “We are getting a petition drive going to show TWIA that it’s a bad decision to raises rates as our community still recovers from Harvey.” Coastal Bend residents who did not attend today’s rally may sign the petition online by visiting www.CoastalBendUnited.com.

Coastal Bend United (Aransas Pass, Corpus Christi, Ingleside, Portland, Port Aransas, Rockport-Fulton and Taft) is a network of seven local Chambers of Commerce that have joined forces to deliver strategic solutions for the post-Harvey economic recovery of communities in the Coastal Bend region of South Texas. The San Patricio and Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporations are dedicated to sustaining, expanding, and attracting business in Nueces County, San Patricio County and the Coastal Bend Region.
