Roving Reporter | "Rockport Recognizes Harvey First Responders" by Jeanette Larson

Part of the activities commemorating Hurricane Harvey's visit to Rockport on August 25, 2017 was a celebration of first responders held at the Festival Grounds on August 25, 2018. Representatives from various groups, including law enforcement, AEP, the City and County services, and animal organizations displayed their emergency vehicles and talked with residents about their activities and services as we look "onward" from Harvey. Activities for children were provided by a variety of organizations and businesses, under the auspices of the Children's Coalition of Aransas County. During the formal ceremonies, representatives from each of the first responder groups were invited to say a few words. Recognized were all of the volunteer fire departments, including some who came from out of our area to help; EMS; law enforcement, including the 911 dispatchers; animal rescue groups, including Wings Rescue Center, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the county animal control, and the Humane Society; various county and city services, including sewer and road workers; and AEP and TxDOT. HEB provided lunch for 2,000, offering hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as other treats.

The event was generously sponsored by D'Ann and Mark Williams and HEB.
