Roving Reporter | "Opening Reception and Gallery Talk with Kitty Dudics" by Vicki Totten

The current show "Reflections" by Kitty Welsh Dudics at the Rockport Center for the Arts fills the walls of the small gallery with vibrant colors and lush landscapes reflecting her travels in Texas, Virginia, and Colorado. Viewing her paintings, it is easy to see why Texas Monthly online magazine named her as one of "The Top Ten Artists to Collect" in 2017.

During her gallery talk, she shared that she often draws her inspiration for her paintings from pre-dawn visits to various parks along Ocean Drive in Corpus Christi. Also included in the show was a painting done during a stay at the Lighthouse Inn before the hurricane, titled "Glow."

Dudics was a professor at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi from 1981 to 2015, teaching painting, drawing and design. Her paintings reflect her love of living near the water, a love she said was nurtured from having grown up in Brownsville, Texas from the age of 6 to 16.

When reflecting on how often water shows up in her paintings, she commented that "water is so much fun because it is the reflection of the sky." As you walk through the gallery, some of her larger paintings are accompanied by smaller versions of the same painting. She explained that while she also will use photographs, she likes to do a small site painting that eventually will become the larger, finished version.

Dudics shared that in a few months she plans to move from Corpus Christi to San Antonio, where she hopes to start painting the rivers. Lucky for Rockport, however, she will be returning to the art center in October, when she will be teaching a class on "The Secrets of Landscape Painting" Oct. 3 and 4. You can also still catch her solo show in Rockport, which will be up through Oct. 13.
